Supreme Award
The brief was for a three-sleeping-area holiday home with a distinctly different feel from a standard house. It had to capture the essence of holiday/beach living. The site was exceptionally difficult, with a very limited building envelope and the topography meant innovate ways had to be found to comply with Council bulk and location requirements. Having an east facing site in a valley, with a tall development to the north, meant that getting sun was more of a problem than controlling too much sun, and the designer, Hugh Grant Architecture, realised all these requests. The house has three zones - an open plan living area, a sleeping/service wing and an entrance/circulation/buffer area - all stepping up the hill. The living zone has a raked ceiling and bifold doors opening to decks on three sides, maximising sun penetration and views, while providing alternative outdoor areas depending on wind conditions.
